Carl Perry
Former Illini and NCAA champion Carl Perry is beginning his seventh year as a member of the Illinois wrestling staff. Perry, who was a four-year varsity starter for the Illini from 1996-2000, returned to his alma mater after one season as head coach at Yorkville High School. Perry, a 2000 NCAA champion at 141 pounds, wrapped up his career as a two-time All-American and a two-time team captain. As a four-time NCAA qualifier, he consistently ranked among the top 10 at 141 pounds nationwide. Perry earned his bachelor's degree in applied life studies in May 2001 with an emphasis in sport management. He and his wife, Jamie, have a daughter, Breanna, and a son, Bryce. The family resides in Champaign.
Casey Brewster is entering his second season as the head coach of the Sacred Heart wrestling team. Brewster is a graduate of the University of West Virginia and holds a degree in Athletic Coaching Education. As a competitor at West Virginia, Brewster was the runner-up at the 2004 Eastern Wrestling League Tournament at 125 pounds and qualified for the NCAA Championships. He started his collegiate career at Edinboro before transferring to WVU. After his NCAA eligibility had expired, the NAIA granted him one more semester of eligibility. In this semester Brewster went on to realize his dream to be a collegiate All-American, accomplishing this feat in the 133 lb weight class. While training with the Mountaineers and the Fighting Scotts, Brewster had the opportunity to train with high-caliber mentors including Zeke Jones (Pennsylvania), now US National Freestyle Head Coach, Lou Rosselli (Ohio State) and Craig Turnbull (WVU). While living in Morgantown, Brewster was a member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club and finished his collegiate career with a record of 66-28. Brewster is a native Californian and wrestled in the Sacramento Wrestling Association from the ages of five to nine. His family later moved to Nashville Tennessee where he was a four time place finisher, multiple state champion, and high school All-American. Brewster started his collegiate coaching as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater. He moved on to Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina to accept the assistant coach position. He remained there until he was hired as the assistant coach at %$*$%%%. From %$*$%%% Brewster came to Sacred Heart and took over the reigns of the wrestling team as the head coach. Brewster calls his position at Sacred Heart "an honor and a privilige." Brewster works several Wrestling Camps throughout the country with an emphasis in the eastern states. He also worked as a clinician in California at the camp of his college wrestling coach at WVU, Zeke Jones as well as others. Casey resides in Bridgeport with his wife Tonia. Together they look forward to building the wrestling program at SHU to highest level of collegiate
wrestling.
Heath EslingerCoach Eslinger and his wife Brandi have three girls. Brookelyn age 2 and twin girls Madelyn and Keelyn that are 6 months old. High School State Champion: 1994 and 1995
College Attended University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1995-2000.

Mark Philip Schultz (b. 1960) is a retired Olympic and World champion freestyle wrestler and a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He is the brother of the late Dave Schultz, who also won a freestyle wrestling gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. Between them, the Schultz brothers won more NCAA, World, and Olympic titles than any American brother combination in history. Schultz attended Palo Alto High, coached by Ed Hart and Chris Horpel. He only wrestled his senior year and ended up winning the California state championship (CIF). His coach said that his win could have been a result of wrestling in his brother's shadow. Schultz won the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal in Freestyle
Wrestling. He was also a 3-time NCAA Champion and 2-time World Champion. Schultz later competed in mixed martial
arts. At UFC 9 on May 17, 1996, he defeated Gary Goodridge by
TKO. He currently works for a masonry contracting company in Denver.
Lee Pritts is in his second stint as an assistant wrestling coach at the
University of Missouri. Pritts was an assistant for the Tigers for six seasons before leaving in 2004 to become an assistant at Old Dominion University,
where he spent three seasons. Pritts' return at the start of the 2007-08 campaign was coupled with the addition of Shawn Charles and 2007 graduate and
two-time defending 174 pound national champion Ben Askren as new Tiger assistants.

I could not agree more with WrestlingAdmin's list.
1. Schalles 2. Perry 3. Pritts / Eslinger 4. Brewster / Schultz I would love to see Schalles with a head assistant coach of Eslinger. I have been a big fan of Schalles and his style for a long time, I feel that he could help the mind set in the room by help these kids see that as long as there is time on the clock you are never beaten in any match against anyone

PERRY vs ESLINGER | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Eslinger:
Local favorite: National Qualifier, UTC Asst. coach 3 yr's, currently head coach @ Cleveland H.S. Perry: Strong Credentials: National Champion, 2 X All American, 7 yr's. coaching in the Big Ten, currently asst. coach @ Univ. Illinois I have heard nothing but quality comments re: Eslinger, certainly a local favorite, he would stick around. Perry has the stronger credentials of the two, known as a great technical teacher (runs his own camps & clinics). Tough choice... |

It seems that there are a number of people on here and other forums who feel that finding a coach with local ties may be the highest priority.
I feel strongly in a different way. Chattanooga needs to make this position attractive enough to where the best coaches make this their destination and a stepping stone. This means allowing them to run their camps and make a large portion of the profit to supplement their coaching income. It means top notch facilities like many top 20 teams have. It means a full allocation of athletic scholarships. I prefer to find the best coach for the job. As far as the young up and coming coaches goes, Perry seems to be by far the strongest candidate in the group. In the more experienced group Schalles seems to be the strongest. We have had bad luck with coaches over the last ten years. Focusing on the BEST coaches and creating an atmosphere that makes this the BEST job is the way to go. We can be the top of the socon without a top coach, but Brands and Bono have shown us that we can compete with the best in the country. The kids and program deserve another top notch coach, and I hope the search committee delivers that. |

WrestlingAdmin wrote:You make some very good points and I agree. But is the administration even interested in committing to the program in these ways: facilities, scholarships, assistant coaches? If not, then I don't think it will ever be a top coaching prospect's "destination." |

Athletic Budget Cuts | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
We all want bigger and better "BUT"
Per the Chattanooga Times Free Press (7/1/09): Rick Hart and Matt Pope announce a $250,000 ($248,029) cut in spending for the athletic department's upcoming seasons. Recruiting will be hit the hardest: Football's budget of $40,000 will be cut by $4,000 to ($36,000) Wrestling's budget of $1,500 will be cut by $150 to ($1,350) Travel will also take a big hit. Needless to say, money is limited for UTC sports, I have personally communicated with Rick Hart and Matt Pope, and I believe they are committed to the continued success and excellence that UTC has been achieving. UTC finished in the top 100 this year in D1 NCAA athletics, not bad with such a small budget. "GO MOCS" |

Just because someone is a "local" does not make them a favorite.
