SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Ty Patterson is a man of his word.
The junior forward kept a promise he made to his University of Tennessee at Chattanooga teammates 13 days ago, when he cried after a game.
Patterson hit four crucial free throws and led the Mocs with 23 points Thursday night in an 84-77 Southern Conference victory over Wofford in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
At Elon on Jan. 24, Patterson felt he lost the game for UTC by missing three straight free throws in the second overtime of an 86-85 loss.
He made the big ones Thursday.
"Ty showed what type of character he's got," senior Keyron Sheard said. "We told him to keep going and that 'nobody is down on you.' We told him that he'll have another chance to be in that same situation."
It wasn't double-overtime, but the Mocs once trailed by 12 and Patterson toed the line for a one-and-one with the Mocs trailing by three. He sank them both with 3:34 to go.
Following a Wofford shot-clock violation, Patterson found himself in the same situation, only with the chance to give UTC its first lead of the game. He made one and the bonus shot.
