CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team looks to continue its spring rising this weekend at the Furman Intercollegiate. The three-day, 54-hole affair opens Friday morning with 18 holes each day through Sunday.
The Mocs are nearly seven shots better per round in the spring (289.22) than in the fall (296.00). Freshman Lake Johnson made the biggest strides. His 73.88 tally since the start of the New Year is almost four full strokes (3.98) below his number at the season's turn (77.86).
Wes Gosselin continues to pace the squad. His 72.29 scoring average for 2015-16 currently ranks fourth in the conference. Andrew Weathers (73.70), Brooks Thomas (74.39) and Kory Webb (75.78) join Gosselin and Johnson in the starting lineup. Stuart Thomas (74.88) plays as an individual this week.
One of the biggest reasons for the scoring uptick, or downturn depending on your point of view, is the par 5 performance. Through 14 fall rounds, the squad was -4 (4.98) on par 5s. They're -36 in the spring (9 cards) averaging 4.45 strokes per par 5 hole on the counting cards.
