Mocs are preparing for the March 5 SoCon Tournament in Asheville, N.C.Scottie Boykin has been named the Arby's Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Feb. 10-16, the league office announced today.
Boykin helped the Mocs to a win over The Citadel to clinch a share of the Southern Conference regular-season title on Friday before picking up a win over a ranked opponent to help Chattanooga knock off No. 19 Virginia on Sunday.
Against the Bulldogs, the 197-pounder from Murfreesboro, Tenn., defeated Marshall Haas by a 9-4 count to cap his third straight undefeated conference slate. With the victory, Boykin moved to 7-0 in SoCon action this season and pushed his career record to 20-0 in league duals.
Chattanooga's 34-3 team win over The Citadel clinched a share of the Mocs' fourth straight regular-season title and 16th overall. UTC finished with a 6-1 SoCon record, tying Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb for the SoCon regular-season crown.
Boykin pushed his overall record on the season to 18-6 (12-1 dual) two days later, downing No. 11 Zachary Nye 7-3 as the Mocs upset the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va. Boykin trailed 1-0 entering the third period but used three takedowns to pick up three crucial team points for Chattanooga, which rallied from an 18-7 deficit for the 19-18 victory.
UTC, which wrapped up its regular-season slate with a 12-4 dual mark, is back in action at the Arby's Southern Conference Wrestling Championship on March 5 at Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C. Chattanooga will be seeking its sixth straight title and 30th overall.
