There has been a lot of discussion among us Moc fans about how the Southern Conference was going to be weaker after the 5 schools left, Appy State, CofC, Davidson, Elon and Georgia Southern.. After the first season without those 5, some big shoes where left to be be filled..With those 5, the conference was losing among other things: The best over all Mens Program in Appy State ( they left with 34 Commissioner's Cups), The German Cup started in 1987 to award the best over all Womens Program, Appy State left with 10 of those, witch is the most won by any program..The top 2 Football Programs, Georgia Southern and Appy State won 9 National and 22 Conference Titles..The top Mens Basketball spot was held by Davidson, with or without current NBA MVP, Steph Curry and CofC was among the top 3 programs over the last 12-15 years in the conference..Georgia Southern and CofC were the top 2 baseball programs and the conference was getting 2 or 3 teams in the NCAA's pretty regular, Appy State was the 2nd or 3rd best Womens Basketball program over the last 20 years.. With all that said, let's take a look at year number one of the New and smaller Southern Conference standings in each sport: There are now 20 sports the conference crowns Champions in, 8 sports do not have a won - lost record listed, Mens and Womens Golf, Mens and Womens Cross Country, Mens and Womens Indoor Track and Mens and Womens Outdoor Track and Field.. Of the 12 sports that the Southern Conference has standings/records for, only 3 sports had more teams with a winning record than not.. Baseball 3of 9 (3/9)with winning record, Football 4/8, Mens Basketball 4/10, Womens Basketball 4/8, Mens Tennis 3/8, Womens Tennis 3/8, Mens LaCrouse 2/7, Mens Soccer 3/6, Wrestling 2/8 and the three sports with more teams with a winning record than not are, Womens Soccer 6/10, Softball 5/7 and Volleyball 5/9.. There is no question, the Southern Conference has a long ways to go to be a strong and competitive conference, maybe some new coaches and even a couple more new schools could speed up the process..
