UAB fired Mike Davis Friday morning with one year left on his contract, Davis told ESPN.com.
Davis said he was told he was fired because of poor ticket sales and attendance.
Davis led the Blazers to the Conference USA regular-season title last year and a First Four NCAA appearance.
The Blazers slumped this season, however, and went 15-16 (9-7 in CUSA) after last season's 22-win performance.
UAB made three NIT appearances under Davis.
Davis, who previously coached at Indiana, replaced Mike Anderson at UAB in April 2006. Davis led Indiana to the 2002 national title game, where the Hoosiers lost to Maryland, a year after taking over for the fired Bob Knight.
CUSA's membership is changing, with the departure of Memphis, UCF, SMU and Houston to the Big East in 2013, and the eventual merger with the Mountain West.
