“Style of play is important for our student athletes,” McLaughlin said, noting also that VCU owns a trademark on the Havoc style for which VCU and Shaka Smart are famous. “I really think our program has elevated to a nationally elite level program. We want someone who’s going to be really good at VCU and move it forward from what Coach [Smart] did.”

8Sports has compiled a list of potential replacements for Shaka Smart. These suggestions are purely guesses, and there is no information to suggest that any of the names on the list are being seriously considered. McLaughlin did not get specific about who he planned to target.

  • Mike Rhoades: Current head coach at Rice University; former VCU assistant under Shaka Smart; former Randolph-Macon Head Coach
  • Will Wade: Current head coach at the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga; former VCU assistant under Shaka Smart
  • Mike Jones: Current head coach at Radford University; former VCU assistant under Shaka Smart
  • Bobby Hurley: Current head coach at Buffalo (SUNY- Buffalo)
  • Anthony Grant: former Alabama head coach; former VCU head coach
  • Jeff Caple: Current Duke assistant coach; former Oklahoma head coach; former VCU head coach

McLaughlin said prior head coaching experience will not be a requirement, and VCU coaching experience under Smart will also not be a requirement.
