Buckley impresses, not McCoy

Buckley was easily the most impressive of the three Friday in the team's first contact scrimmage at Lehigh. The second-year pro, claimed off waivers from the Chargers, ripped off a 45-yard run on his first carry -- the longest run by any back for the scrimmage.

Offensively, rookie LeSean McCoy has taken a clear lead over Lorenzo Booker in the race to become running back Brian Westbrook's backup. Free agent Eldra Buckley also bears watching tonight. An unexpected battle has arisen on the offensive line. It was assumed that free agent Stacy Andrews had a lock on the starting job at right guard, but Reid is not ready to demote Nick Cole just yet.

Workhorse back: Eldra Buckley, a bruising running back, claimed off waivers from the San Diego Chargers in March, has established himself as a workhorse in the first week of practice.

A first-year player who spent last season on the Chargers' practice squad, Buckley has played like a hard-hitting 5-foot-9, 215-pound machine in the first week.

  • Eldra Buckley became the star at the RB position for the 2nd day in a row, and there is no question that he is pushing hard for a backup job. The free agent signing who spent his previous career on the Chargers' practice squad broke free of defenders several times while running the ball, including many spectacular "after-contact" carries in which he gained at least 2 or 3 more yards after being hit.
