2nd in Command!
As always, this year's event will feature numerous Division I college prospects. Among the NBA players who have played in this event since it began in 1995 are Tim Thomas of the New York Knicks, Samuel Dalembert of the Philadelphia 76ers and J.R. Smith of the Denver Nuggets.
These are the players to watch in this year's event:
Quincy Miller, Quality Education (N.C.): The 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, originally from Chicago, has begun to attract the attention of several colleges, most notably North Carolina.
Jason Calliste, Quality Education: The 6-2 guard out of Canada averages better than 17 points. He has scholarship offers from Rhode Island, Charlotte, Chattanooga and Marshall. Rahlir Jefferson, Chester (Pa.): The 6-6 forward has verbally committed to Temple.
Denzel Yard, Franklin Learning Center (Pa.): The 5-11, left-handed point guard is headed to Siena. He led the Bobcats to the Philadelphia Public League B Division title.
Dera Nd-ezuma, Life Center Academy: The 6-10 center has verbally committed to Rider.
Dylan Talley, Life Center Academy: The 6-5 shooting guard averages 14.6 points and is headed to Binghamton, N.Y.
Umar Shannon, Atlantic City: The senior guard averages 18.1 points and is headed to Saint Francis in Latrobe, Pa.
Isaiah Morton, St. Augustine Prep: The sophomore guard averages 18.6 points.
Bill Giberson, St. Augustine Prep: The 6-4 forward is one of the region's most athletic players and averages 14.9 points.
B.J. Bailey, Holy Spirit: The standout guard averages 15.1 points and is headed to Boston University.
Can't-miss games
Chester, Pa. (15-2) vs. Camden Catholic (14-3)
5 p.m. Saturday
A contrast in styles as the up-tempo Clippers meet Camden Catholic's matchup zone. Both teams are perennial powers. Chester's two losses are by a total of five points. Camden Catholic is No. 5 in The Press' Elite 11 and the defending South Jersey Non-Public A champion. The Irish beat rival Camden on Thursday, avenging one of their three defeats.
St. Augustine Prep (15-1) vs. Holy Spirit (14-1)
6:30 p.m. Saturday
Spirit has won six of the last seven meetings between these rivals, including a victory in last season's South Jersey Non-Public A semifinals. The Hermits are No. 3 in The Press' Elite 11. Spirit is No. 6.
Pleasantville (9-6) vs. Atlantic City (11-4)
1:30 p.m. Sunday
The traditional Battle by the Bay finale and always one of the season's most anticipated games. For many fans, it's the only contest they attend all season. The game, which includes a halftime show by both schools' cheerleaders, is a celebration of the two communities. Atlantic City leads the overall series 65-10 and holds a 7-6 edge in Battle by the Bay games. Pleasantville upset the Vikings 63-59 last year.
