University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore J.T. Clendenin owns the individual lead at 6 under par after the first round of the Linger Longer Invitational golf tournament at Reynolds Landing in Greensboro, Ga.
At 10-under 278, the 17th-ranked Mocs are one stroke behind No. 26 Mississippi for the team lead. Top-ranked Georgia and Georgia State are seven strokes off the lead in a 14-team field that has seven of the top 35 teams in the country.
"I feel good about where we're at," UTC coach Mark Guhne said. "Ole Miss and us have been butting heads for the last couple of years, and it's good competition."
Clendenin eagled No. 2 and had five birdies to go with a bogey Friday. He leads three golfers by a stroke.
"J.T. is getting very comfortable being here, and he's been working hard on his short game," Guhne said. "He's capable of shooting deep rounds."
Mocs junior Jonathan Hodge is tied for fifth after a 4-under 68, and sophomore Ben Rickett is tied for 13th at 2 under. Derek Rende shot a 74, and Fredrik Qvuicker shot a 76.
"All five of them are really playing well," Guhne said. "I never know where those great rounds are going to come from."
