Coaches pick Lady Mocs to win Southern Conference; Hollinquest named preseason player of the year

For the third straight year, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team has been picked to win the Southern Conference by the league's coaches, and senior post player Shanara Hollinquest was selected at the preseason player of the year.

UTC received 98 points and nine first place votes in the balloting, followed by Samford with 91 points and the remaining two first place votes.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team exhibited a lot of potential and a lot of room for improvement Thursday night at McKenzie Arena.

In an exhibition game against Lee University, Cleveland native Michelle Davis, in her first action since transferring to UTC last fall, scored a game-high 19 points against her hometown school in the Lady Mocs' 86-53 win. The 6-foot-2 redshirt freshman also had seven rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.

Wes Moore Says Freshmen May Play Key Role For Lady Mocs

UTC women's basketball coach Wes Moore said Wednesday that several freshmen, including former Cleveland High star Michelle Davis, could play key roles for this year's edition of the Lady Mocs.

He also mentioned Kylie Lambert of McMinn Central and Kayla Christopher of Oliver Springs as potential impact players.

Davis was recruited by North Carolina State, but stayed only a short time and has four years of eligibility for UTC.

Hollinquest Named Mid Major Top 25 by Full Court Press

Chattanooga senior forward Shanara Hollinquest's efforts on the court received recognition when Full Court Press named her a Top-25 Mid Major player Monday afternoon.
